The science of sex change surgery

In spite of the popular education and media barrage to the contrary, there is really no such thing as a sex change surgery. Sex is more than just anatomy.  It is more than just hormones.  In fact this is crux of the very argument used by the Trans community, but it cuts both ways.

As stated by  Ryan T. Anderson Ph. D., “Sex “reassignment” doesn’t work. It’s impossible to “reassign” someone’s sex physically, and attempting to do so doesn’t produce good outcomes psychosocially.”(1)

Dr. Paul McHugh, professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine states, “Transgendered men do not become women, nor do transgendered women become men. All (including Bruce Jenner) become feminized men or masculinized women, counterfeits or impersonators of the sex with which they ‘identify.’ In that lies their problematic future.”(2)

You see, removing a penis and scrotum, or attempting to construct a urethra so a person can urinate into a urinal from the standing position, does not in any meaningful or real way, change a person’s sex.  Instead of calling it a sex change surgery, it should be called a genital mutilation surgery.  The male will still have male chromosomes, hormone receptors and frame and build.  The female will still have a female shape, subcutaneous fat, and tilt to the pelvis. There will still be difference in skeletal shape, muscle mass, hair distribution, brain structure, amygdala, brain connectivity, numbers of WBC and RBC and much, much more.

Genital mutilation is NOT a sex change.  And the mental health literature is beginning to confirm what many already knew about this.  Large numbers of those with “sex change” surgery continue to be unhappy, depressed and suicidal.   In fact the suicide rate is persistently and tragically very  high in this group.  And many are now requesting that the surgery be reversed.

“Transgenders have high levels of mental-health problems such as depression, resulting in increased levels of self-injury and suicidal ideation (thoughts, attempts, and rates), finds a September study from the highly respected Nottingham Centre for Gender Dysphoria in the United Kingdom.”(3)

But unfortunately this is probably just the tip of the iceberg.  There is not, and has not ever been, good tracking and information about the post operative course of transgender individuals.  Between 50 and 90 percent are lost to any effective followup.  This is not just bad medicine.  It is not just bad science.  It is malpractice to perform mutilating surgeries without proof of benefit, and with strong possibility of harm.

“Another review of more than 100 international medical studies of post-operative transsexuals conducted in 2004 by the University of Birmingham’s aggressive research facility, Arif, warned “the results of many gender reassignment studies are unsound because researchers lost track of more than half of the participants. For example, in a five-year study of 727 post-operative transsexuals published last year, 495 people dropped out for unknown reasons.”(4)

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27
